The Environmental Engineering Laboratory in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Patras functions with a prime objective to facilitate teaching and to promote research in the field of Environmental Engineering, especially the areas of contaminant transport in environmental systems, water and air quality, water purification, sewage and industrial waste treatment and disposal, air pollution and solid wastes management.
Research activities of the laboratory include:
- Direct anaerobic treatment of low and high-strength wastes
- Water and wastewater characterization studies
- Contaminant and bio-colloid transport in environmental systems
- NAPL dissolution
in porous media
- Aquifer remediation with application of acoustic waves
- Wastewater treatment powered by solar energy
- Estimation of river flow
- Measuring, modeling and predicting air quality
The Environmental Engineering Laboratory is equipped with standard laboratory and field instrumentation and samplers and numerous pilot plant units, and has available major analytical-research equipment including microscope and stereoscopic microscope with an image analysis system, Coulter particle counter, atomic absorption spectrophotometer with graphite furnace, total organic carbon analyzer, HPLC ion chromatograph, gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer and air quality analysis station for particulate and gaseous pollutants. There are also numerous computers with state-of-the-art software and an extensive environmental engineering library.
The staff includes four faculty members, one post-doctoral researcher, two doctoral candidates, several graduate students, and numerous undergraduate students conducting their diploma thesis.
