Dr. Georgios Apostolakis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering. He received his Diploma from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Patras (2004), and holds a Master of Science (2006) and PhD (2010) from the University at Buffalo (UB, SUNY) USA.
In the past, he held the positions of Research Scientist and Teaching Instructor at the University at Buffalo (UB, SUNY) USA (2010-2011), Director of Advanced Development at Sprung-brett RDI Inc in Amherst-ΝΥ USA (2011-2012), Senior Technical Professional – Marine Engineer at KBR Inc. in Houston USA (2013-2017), and Assistant Professor at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando USA.
His many years of experience and research span broad areas of applied, computational and experimental mechanics and engineering disciplines, including performance-based seismic engineering and non-linear response of structures and infrastructure, seismic performance design of onshore and offshore structures and infrastructure, advanced computational methods for progressive collapse of structures and infrastructure, and design of seismic protection systems and reinforcement of new and existing structures using optimization methods (Genetic Algorithms, Machine Learning, etc.), seismic risk and vulnerability assessment. Emphasis is placed on multiple hazards (earthquake, wind, wave, explosion, fire, etc.) and on the reliability, structural integrity, robustness and sustainability of structures and infrastructure. His major contributions to theoretical, applied, and computational mechanics include the development of innovative mixed principles and mathematical formulations for nonlinear dynamic response analysis of structures at multiple length scales.
His professional and consulting experience includes research and studies on numerous offshore platform projects, both fixed and floating offshore energy structures, located in various regions of the world with an emphasis on providing solutions to difficult structural engineering and risk assessment problems for the benefit of the energy and oil and gas industry focusing on dynamic actions, seismic and metocean loading, fatigue analysis, dynamic explosion response analysis, dynamic stability analysis under fire thermal loads, life extension and integrity management (IM) studies , and development of Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) framework for offshore fixed and floating platforms.
He has published 3 monographs, 2 book chapters, more than 30 scientific papers in journals and international conferences, and more than 30 technical reports related to the seismic and nonlinear response and progressive collapse of structures under multiple hazards and extremes, and variational mixed multiphysics formulations at multiple scales with applications to structures. He has supervised many graduate students both as the main advisor and as a member of three-member advisory committees.
