Dr Kotsovinos holds a PhD degree from the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Edinburgh. His professional and research career has centred around the field of fire engineering and fire protection. For almost 11 years he worked for the international consulting firm Arup in the United Kingdom (UK) where he also served as a UK lead for the structural fire engineering skills team. He has worked on multiple projects internationally with respect to the fire engineering of steel, composite, concrete and timber structures with a goal to enable a sustainable, safe and economic design. He holds visiting academic appointments at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London and at the Department of Civil Engineering at York University Canada, where he has also supervised multiple research projects. He has contributed in multiple standardisation committees in the UK (BSI FSH/24) and globally (ISO TC92/SC4). Dr Kotsovinos was the panel leader for the revision of the BS PD 7974-3:2019 “Structural fire response and fire spread” standard. He has received awards for his contributions in research and innovation and application in cutting edge practical projects such as the Society of Fire Protection Engineers UK Best Fire Research Project award (2022), The Engineer Collaborate to Innovate – Built Environment award (2017) and Society of Fire Protection Engineers UK Best Fire Research Project award (2015).
